Summary
Since 2006, the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) has served as a critical symbol of innovation and hope in Afghanistan’s healthcare sector. As we approach our twentieth anniversary in April 2026, FMIC has evolved from a specialized pediatric hospital into a comprehensive tertiary care center serving patients of all ages. Managed by the Aga Khan University, FMIC remains dedicated to providing high-quality, equitable care even in the most challenging environments.
The Challenge: Breaking Financial Barriers
In a region where specialized medical services are scarce, financial hardship often prevents families from seeking the life-saving care they need. For indigent patients, particularly women and children, the cost of advanced diagnostics or complex surgeries can be an insurmountable obstacle. FMIC’s mission is to ensure that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and that poverty never stands in the way of a child’s survival or a mother’s health.
Our Impact: The Patient Welfare Program
The heart of our mission is the Patient Welfare Program (PWP). We are proud to share that through the generosity of our global supporters, this program has now achieved the following milestones:
850,000 Patients Supported: We have provided subsidies to nearly 850,000 vulnerable individuals, ensuring they receive the same international standard of care as any other patient.
$62 Million in Subsidies: To date, FMIC has utilized over $62 million USD to cover the costs of life-saving treatments, diagnostics, and surgeries for those in need.
2.3 Million Patient Visits: Across the hospital, we have completed millions of visits and performed over 59,000 surgeries, including complex open-heart procedures.
Clinical Excellence and Innovation
FMIC is the first hospital in Afghanistan to achieve both SafeCare and ISO certification, demonstrating our unwavering adherence to international standards of safety and quality. Our 176-bed facility offers a full continuum of care, including:
Advanced Diagnostics: Access to CT, MRI, and digital radiology.
Specialized Surgery: Expertise in cardiology, cardiac surgery, orthopedics, and neonatology.
Telemedicine: We pioneered teleradiology in Afghanistan, earning the International Hospital Federation (IHF) Award in 2021 for "Reaching the Unreached".
A Message to Our Donors
Your support through GlobalGiving is the lifeline that makes this work possible. Every dollar contributed to our Patient Welfare Program directly translates into a life saved, a child’s heart repaired, a mother safely delivering her baby, or a family receiving a diagnosis they thought was out of reach.
Thank you for standing with the people of Afghanistan and for being a part of this twenty-year journey of healing and integrity.
