Dear friends:

We greet you and present our report corresponding to our project “The Health Care of Tsotsil Indigenous Children in Chiapas, Mexico” for the period from October to December 2025.

One of the strategies with which we work in the Sanando program, in addition to comprehensive medical consultation, is the Growth and Development (G&D) monitoring group, which provides monitoring and follow-up on medical care (medical consultations, nutritional follow-up, counseling on diet, breastfeeding, warning signs for preventable diseases) for children aged 0 to 5 years.

During this period, we attended to 129 children under 5 years of age with a total of 146 primary care medical consultations in 7 communities and at the Sanando Heridas clinic in San Cristóbal de las Casas with the following diagnoses:

57.5% are in normal nutritional status, 42.5% in chronic malnutrition.

In this monitoring group, we focused on providing essential care to the users’ children under 6 months and pregnant women in their third trimester or in the postpartum period, crucial stages for the proper development of the newborn, making it essential to insist on maintaining exclusive breastfeeding during this period and starting complementary feeding after 6 months.

All mothers of children under 6 months and this group of pregnant or postpartum women were given guidance and counseling on exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of their babies’ lives, resolving doubts about techniques, frequency, benefits, etc.

Another important group are children under 2 years old, as we provide care and information on how to properly carry out complementary feeding and the introduction of different foods to prevent nutritional deterioration that they might experience during the transition from exclusive breastfeeding to the incorporation of solid foods that are consumed at home. In all consultations (100%), mothers are advised on how to start and maintain complementary feeding, as well as receiving counseling according to the nutritional status of the child at the time of the medical consultation.

Strengthening the health of children is our priority!

We invite you to continue supporting vulnerable children in the Tsotsil region of the Chiapas highlands.

Thank you very much for your participation and support.

Grupo de Vigilancia Crecimiento y Desarrollo

Queridos amigos:
