Thank you for your support of this project helping to create stronger and healthier communities through this partnership with Londiani Sub-County Hospital and Mayo University Hospital. Here is our latest update from Carolyne Chepngetich, Health Programme co-ordinator with Brighter Communities Worldwide in Kenya.

Since our last report, the construction of the trauma centre at Londiani Sub-County Hospital has made huge progress. We would not have been able to achieve this without your support and we are very grateful to you.

The following areas have been the focus of the last 3 months -

  • The covered walkways connecting the centre to other hospital departments, the pavements surrounding the building, and the base for the rain water harvesting water tanks have all been completed.
  • Solar panels have been installed - solar energy will provide a reliable and sustainable power source that improves service delivery in the trauma centre. It ensures uninterrupted power for critical medical equipment, enhances emergency care and lowers operational costs. The installation of a solar hot water system in the trauma centre will provide a steady water supply of hot water for sterilising medical equipment and patient hygiene.
  • A reliable water source is essential for maintaining hygiene, preventing infections and ensuring smooth patient care. To guarantee uninterrupted water supply in the hospital, solar energy has been harnessed to power the hospital’s borehole pump. In addition, rainwater will be harvested through a system of gutters and stored in storage water tanks.
  • Training - by providing hospital teams with the right skills, resources, and confidence, we can strengthen their ability to manage trauma effectively, improve patient outcomes, and minimize preventable deaths. In addition to our Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training, in May four healthcare workers from Londiani Sub-County Hospital, Emmanuel from Physiotherapy, and Winny, Kelvin, and Maureen from the Orthopaedic Department, attended a three-day Remote Emergency Care training delivered by Response Med in partnership with Brighter Communities Worldwide The topics covered in the course included: The Pre-hospital Environment, Scene Management, Airway Management, Management of Unconscious Patient, Circulation & Shock, General bone/Joint Injuries (Fracture management), Illness, Bites & Stings and Practical Scenarios.
  • In recent staff postings, the county posted 10 staff to Londiani Sub-County hospital - 4 nurses, 2 pharmaceutical Technologists, 2 Laboratory Technologists, 1 Pharmacist and 1 Health Records and Information Officer.

In June 2025, a team of 9 students from the School of Nursing and Mid-wifery at the University of Galway spent a month volunteering with Brighter Communities Worldwide and this included placement at Londiani Sub-County Hospital. They learned from the hospital staff and shared their knowledge through Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions delivered jointly by the students and hospital staff. The topics covered included: Malaria infection and prevention, Strain & Sprain, Lower back pain, Down Syndrome, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Dementia, Pressure Sores, Polypectomy, hysteroscopy and MyoSure procedure.

Your support is deeply appreciated as fundraising continues to equip the Trauma Centre with essential items such as defibrillators, oxygen concentrators, bedside monitors, hospital beds, emergency trolleys, stretchers, wheelchairs, drip stands, IT infrastructure, and more.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey!
