Since launching as a pilot initiative to support long-term health through education on lifestyle modifications, the Mayanza program has grown into an ongoing effort to empower Maya women with the knowledge and skills to make sustainable, healthy choices for themselves and their families. Initially focused on preventing diabetes and other chronic diseases, the program now encompasses a holistic approach to wellness that addresses physical, mental, and social health.
Program Activities and Impact
Weekly Interactive Sessions: Participants attend sessions covering disease prevention, nutrition, exercise, sexual and reproductive health, goal setting, and stress management. Each session is designed with cultural respect and community needs in mind, ensuring the content is practical, relevant, and actionable.
Workshops with Local Experts: The program integrates local knowledge with modern health practices. Workshops cover topics such as medicinal plants, reproductive health, healthy cooking, and household health strategies (e.g., water filters and low-emission stoves). This approach reinforces cultural identity while promoting holistic health.
Physical Activity and Movement: Weekly exercise sessions with a trained instructor help women build confidence and develop sustainable habits for incorporating movement into daily life. These activities are tailored to be enjoyable and adaptable to each participant’s lifestyle.
Community-Centered Support: The combination of education, expert workshops, and physical activity fosters a supportive environment, encouraging women to make lasting changes that benefit themselves, their families, and the wider community.
Growth and Milestones
Recruitment of New Participants: We are excited to be recruiting new groups of women from four communities to begin participating in the program this month, expanding our reach and impact.
Graduation of Program Participants: At the end of February, we will celebrate the graduation of five groups of women who have completed the program, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to sustain healthy lifestyles for themselves and their families.
Outcomes and Vision
The Mayanza program has created a safe, empowering space for Maya women to learn, practice, and adopt healthier behaviors. By blending cultural knowledge with modern health strategies, participants gain the tools needed for long-term disease prevention, improved well-being, and enhanced family health.
As the program continues to grow, Mayanza remains committed to expanding its reach, strengthening community engagement, and ensuring that women have the support and resources they need to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
