Merida is getting hotter each year. Neighborhoods flood after stronger tropical storms, and green spaces continue to disappear. Families are already feeling the effects of climate change. Alberto, the Native Tree Nursery Caretaker at Kanan Kab, works every day growing native trees that cool the air, restore soil, and absorb rainwater. With your support, we will produce and plant 5,000 native trees across Merida - reducing heat, preventing flooding, and restoring hope for local families.
Merida is getting hotter each year. Rapid urban growth and loss of native trees have intensified extreme heat and urban flooding. Many neighborhoods lack shade, and paved streets no longer absorb heavy tropical rains. Families - especially children and older adults - face rising heat stress and climate vulnerability. At the same time, native biodiversity is disappearing. Merida urgently needs restored tree cover to cool communities and reduce flooding.
We will produce and plant 5,000 native trees across heat- and flood-prone neighborhoods in Merida. Seeds will be collected locally and grown in our community nursery under the care of our Native Tree Nursery Caretaker. Once ready, trees will be donated to the community as well as planted with community participation . Native species will provide shade, absorb rainwater, restore soil, and strengthen urban biodiversity.
As these 5,000 trees mature, they will lower neighborhood temperatures, reduce flooding, improve air quality, and restore habitat for native species. Increased canopy cover will strengthen Merida's climate resilience for decades. This project builds long-term environmental stability while directly protecting families from extreme heat and stronger storms.
