The Central American spider monkey is in danger of extinction and your help is needed to protect them. The species plays an important role in dispersing seeds and rebuilding forests. Paso Pacifico's community rangers monitor spider monkeys and protect their forest habitat. They also run a small sanctuary for monkeys rescued from the pet trade. This center includes a spacious enclosure, daily enrichment, and proximity to a natural forest. It also serves as an education center to raise awareness
Spider monkeys are considered the new world's most intelligent primate. They live in the forest canopy and rely on fruiting trees for food. In Central America, fragmented forests and the illegal pet trade have decimated populations. As a result, subpopulations in Nicaragua are critically endangered and many individual monkeys are trapped in inhumane conditions as "pets". People in the region are often unaware of the plight of the species or the suffering that these animals endure in captivity.
With your help, we can provide top-tier care for spider monkeys rescued from the pet trade, improving the quality of their lives in captivity. While they cannot return to the wild due to their habituation to human interaction, they can serve as ambassadors for the species through educational programming that give 200 local students the opportunity to visit them each year. There the students learn about the negative impacts of the pet trade and develop empathy and concern for wildlife.
Over the long-term, your investments in the spider monkeys at the sanctuary will lead to reduced hunting of spider monkeys for the pet trade and cultural understanding and care for primates in the forest. In addition, by maintaining this program, we can also sustain the Mono Bayo Reserve which not only protects the spider monkeys in the enclosure, but provides forest habitat to three species of monkeys and connects forests across a broader landscape.
