Help Retain Neurodivergent Students in School

By Phyllis W. Munyi | Director

Dyslexia Organisation Kenya, through Rare Gem Talent School, continues to champion inclusive education for children with neurodiverse learning needs. The project “Help Retain Neurodivergent Students in School” aims to reduce school dropouts among learners with dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, autism, and other invisible learning challenges by providing the specialised interventions they need to succeed.

Through the generous support of our GlobalGiving donors, we have been able to sustain targeted interventions that bring hope and lasting transformation to children who might otherwise be excluded from education

During this reporting period, your donations directly funded speech therapy sessions for one learner at Rare Gem Talent School. The youth with cerebral palsy, aged eighteen, had severe speech delays that affected communication and participation in class.

With the support received, the learner benefited from:

  • Weekly individualised speech therapy sessions delivered by a qualified speech therapist.

  • Therapeutic materials and assessments to enhance communication development.

  • Parent and teacher training to ensure continuity of practice at home and in the classroom.

The transformation has been remarkable. Within three months, the learner progressed from using gestures to forming short, clear sentences. The child can now greet others, express needs, and actively engage in classroom learning.

This improvement has not only enhanced the child’s academic progress but also restored confidence and joy. The parent shared a heartfelt message:

“For the first time, my child can say, ‘Good morning, Mum.’ It may sound small, but to us, it is everything. We are deeply grateful.”

This powerful change is proof that with the right support, neurodivergent learners can thrive, participate fully in school, and build a brighter future.

We express our sincere appreciation to all GlobalGiving donors who have made this milestone possible. Your compassion has directly changed a youth's life and strengthened our mission to create inclusive learning environments across Kenya.

Together, we can continue to make education accessible and meaningful for every child — regardless of how they learn or communicate.

Your ongoing partnership matters. A recurring monthly donation could fund therapy for another child, keep them in school, and open the door to a brighter future. Please consider renewing or increasing your support today, because every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and belong.
