Reaching out into our community, we have discovered that the greatest need is not work with the families of children (an intenational charity has just provided a large grant for another agency to help children) but with the families of severely impaired adults. The combination of aging parents, less sibling support, and adult bodies too often results in either inadequate and medically dangerous care at home, or placement in an institution where therapies are extremely limited.
To serve these familes, we began a pilot program with 8 of the dozens of famiies in our area who struggle to care for their totally dependent loved one at home. In each instance, staff have provided an in-depth evaluation of the needs of the patient and the family. For some, therapies will be in home. Others will come to the Homes to benefit not only from therapies but also for increased social interaction. Staff will also be training the caregivers as to the best and easiest ways to transfer, feed and bathe their loved one. In addition, appropriate equipment will be provided to make these processes easier for both the patient and the caregiver.
Caregivers are invited to participate in our existing Family Support Program--to share their experiences with those who have the same challenges, and receive acceptance and helping coping strategies.
