This project supports an additional year of training for Indigenous Papuan midwives at Bumi Sehat Angel Hiromi Clinic. By strengthening their education and meeting government requirements, we ensure local mothers and babies receive skilled, compassionate care that honors Papuan culture and traditions. With deeper training and certification, our midwives can continue serving their communities and nurturing safe, gentle births.
Indigenous Papuan women face some of the most difficult maternal health challenges in Indonesia. Many live far from hospitals and experience discrimination or cultural misunderstanding in formal health systems. Because of this, some mothers avoid seeking care after difficult first births and instead give birth at home without skilled support, increasing risks for mothers and newborns.
This project funds an additional year of training so Papuan midwives can deepen their skills and maintain professional certification while continuing their work at the clinic. As Indigenous caregivers, they provide culturally respectful prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. Their presence helps mothers feel safe, welcomed, and supported in seeking skilled midwifery care.
When mothers trust the care they receive, they return for future pregnancies and encourage others to do the same. Skilled Indigenous midwives improve health outcomes for mothers and babies while preserving respectful birth traditions. Over time, these trained midwives can mentor others, strengthening community-led maternal care across Papua.
