Here How You Helped a Recent University Graduate

By Carol Davis | President

Graduate Susan Ellie with OU President - Aug. 2025

I just returned from my summer trip to Uganda. I'm very thankful that this time I was able to spend much time visiting both our sponsored secondary students (7th to 12th graders) at four different schools as well as a dozen of our students who have recently graduated from school or are currently enrolled in vocational and degree programs.

One of those students was Susan Ellie who graduated in January with a degree in secondary teaching of English and literature.  She was excited to share that she now has a good job teaching 11th and 12th grade English at a good high school.  In her case, her path to obtaining this degree was not as straight forward as some.  She had a sponsor in her younger years but when she was ready to begin her university degree, her sponsor could not be reached.  It was through funds from this GlobalGiving project that Susan began her university studies.  Only at the end of her 2nd year, was her sponsor located again and began paying for the last half of her university education.

Had it not been for the availability of funds through this program which were available at a key point, Susan might have never been able to begin her university program, and she would not be teaching, mentoring and guiding other students today!  Thank you for being there at a key time for Susan and making the succesful end to the pursuit of her goals!

The achievement of a university degree was unexpected in Susan's family. She is the only graduate in her extended family.  Her mother is a widow. All of Susan's six siblings have passed away for various reasons.  When Susan began her sponsorship with Outreach Uganda in 2009, her early childhood had not been easy. She lived in an area that had been ravaged by the twenty year war with the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda.

My heartfelt thanks to each of you for your contributions so we can have funds at critical points to see that students can achieve their dreams like Susan.  If you know friends and family who can help us continue this journey, please share this report with them and encourage them to watch the video from Susan (see the link)!
