Disruption to Restoration: Education Perseveres

Mountainside Road Damage - Hurricane Melissa

Bonjou GlobalGiving Family,

We’re excited to share good news from our Mountainside Partner Community, and it’s because of your steadfast support that we can.

After much anticipation, classes officially began for the 2025–2026 academic year on October 7 at the Saul Louis Community School. The children were ready, the teachers were committed, and the excitement in the community was electric.

But just two weeks later, Hurricane Melissa struck Haïti from October 21 through November 4, unleashing 165-mile-per-hour winds and heavy rains that flooded the school building and made the mountain roads impassable. Teachers were unable to travel safely, and the children’s learning was interrupted once again.

Despite these challenges, the story doesn’t end in crisis. It continues in community-powered and led and recovery.

Emergency Response with Impact:

In response to the damage, Community2Community quickly sent down emergency funds to support our Mountainside Partner Community’s Stakeholder Community Association, APHD. With these resources, the community:

  • Cleared the flooded school building
  • Opened the blocked mountain roads
  • Ensured the safe return of teachers and students

Thanks to these collective efforts, the children are now back in class, smiling, learning, and thriving once more. This is the kind of dignity your giving restores.

Teacher Stipends - Updated Progress:

Our goal for the 2024–2025 school year was to raise $60,000 to cover all teacher stipends. As of December, we’ve raised $50,000 and paid the teachers most of their stipend. We’re now in the process of raising the remaining $10,000 to reach our goal and complete the payment for the 24-25 school year. Thanks to your continued generosity, we are closer than ever to fully supporting our teachers, the heroes who educate the next generation under the most difficult conditions.

Thank You!

Every single step forward, from opening day to clearing floodwaters, has only been possible because you chose to give.

Your support has brought our Mountainside Partner Community through another crisis. The kids and teachers are safely back in the classroom, and the community is well underway with their recovery efforts led by APHD. This is the dignity we fight for. This is the future we’re building, together.

This is Development With Dignity.
