Project Report | May 2, 2019
A Beautiful Mare we Named Senora

By Brianne | Project Manager

Dear Supporters,

We are always looking for better hay and feed for our animals, and we try to find better ways to help them. Many times, the better hay and feed, the more expensive; therefore, we are also trying to find better ways to raise funds so we can give our animals everything that they need and deserve.

As a rescue, we get in many horses who are underweight, and we have found that alfalfa is the best to get horses back in shape in a short amount of time. In March this year, we got in a beautiful mare we named Senora. When she came in, she had skin issues, and she was underweight. We put her on a 500-pound compressed alfalfa block, and, within just one month, we saw a big difference in her. She filled out, and her skin got a lot better. Now, she is ready to start her education and to build muscles.

Some horses have a harder time keeping their weight, so, for one group of horses, we started buying the 1000-pound compressed alfalfa block, so that they would have free access to good hay at all times. Within that group of horses, we have seen great improvements, and they absolutely love the alfalfa. They have all filled out nicely, and we wish we could have more horses on alfalfa, since it has so much nutrition in it. One 100-pound block costs around $200 and lasts only for about one week for four horses. This makes it hard if we have all the horses on it, since it gets quite expensive quickly. But it truly makes a difference, and we are working toward being able to have all of our horses on it.

As we go into the summer months, we have some exciting events planned. On May 18th and 19th, we are planning an Adoption Event and Open House. We will focus on our animals who are up for adoption and try to find them homes, as well as, show our center to the public and try to raise some funds. During the whole month of June, we will have summer camps for kids between the ages of 6-12. These camps will be filled with education about animal care and also have some fun games for the kids. We are looking forward to these events and think it will be a great few months for WHRC.

With Love,

The WHRC Team
