Help Save Primates and their Habitat

Dear Supporters of Colobus Conservation,

We hope you are well. We are immensely grateful for your support and dedication to our mission of protecting and conserving wildlife, particularly the six primate species, which include the Angolan black and white Colobus monkeys. With your continued assistance, we have achieved significant progress in the past four months, from March to June.

March & April Progress:
During the months of March and April, our team recorded a total of 48 primate welfare callouts. These calls encompassed various species, including the African Civet, showcasing the importance of our efforts in preserving the rich biodiversity of Diani. Your contributions have enabled us to respond swiftly to these calls and provide the necessary care and support for the wildlife in need.

The African Civet was rescued by Lara and her children who are Diani residents. Lara brought the African Civet to our rescue centre and after spending ten days in rehabilitation we set off to release her back into the wild. However, the release was unsuccessful, and with the civet clearly unable to fend for herself, so after consultation with the Tsavo Trust a good home was found for her at the Trust. 

May Progress:
In May, we encountered a total of 20 animal welfare cases. Among these, were 11 colobus monkeys, 1 feline, 1 civet, 5 Sykes monkeys, and 2 vervet monkeys. Your support played a crucial role in ensuring we responded to each of the animal welfare cases. 

In this month 5 Colobus monkeys were electrocuted showing that there is a need to get powerlines insulated in Diani. 

June Progress:
In June, we received 19 animal welfare cases, each presenting its own set of challenges. During this month, the animal welfare cases included 3 vervet monkeys, 4 Sykes monkeys, 1 mongoose, 1 bushbaby, 1 common swift bird, 3 baboons, and 6 colobus monkeys. 

In this month we had 5 primates including 3 Sykes monkeys, 1 Baboon, and 1 Colobus monkey involved in Road Traffic Accidents where speeding motorist hit the monkeys, while they were trying to cross the road. We also had a case of a painted Baboon, and we are glad that the paint is washing off. 

As we move forward, we look ahead with hope and determination, knowing that with your continuous support, we can continue to protect and conserve the wildlife in our region and promote co-existence between humans and primates.

In December 2022, we had 23 animal welfare call-outs. Out of the December welfare callouts, one vervet monkey entered long-term rehabilitation. We named the Vervet Kongo because he was rescued by the Kongo river. Kongo's story begins with him being abandoned, but fortunately, he has found a home with us at Colobus Conservation and a surrogate mother in Mrembo one of the older female vervet monkeys at our centre. 

In January and February, Team Colobus responded to 67 welfare callouts. Out of the 67 welfare callouts, February had 45 welfare callouts, which led to one abandoned infant whom we found at Swahili Beach Hotel. We named the infant Swahili, which was a name derived from where he was found.

When Swahili was rescued he was one month and two weeks old. However, we have seen strides in his growth as he is now been slowly introduced to the other orphaned monkeys under long-term rehabilitation at our centre. Despite his being shy he has received a warm welcome from the other infants, who are always ready to play with him. 

It has not been easy for us, with the significant increase in animal welfare cases, we need more education and awareness to counter this problem.
