From Crisis to Care: Primate Recovery Highlights

From March to June 2025, Colobus Conservation responded to over 40 wildlife incidents, involving species such as Angolan colobus monkeys, Sykes monkeys, vervets, baboons, and various other wildlife. The most common causes of rescue included natural illness, electrocution, road traffic accidents, dog attacks, abandonment, infanticide, and conflict-related injuries.

With donor support, the organization successfully carried out the following key interventions:

  • Medical Care, Food Supplies, and Rehabilitation: Donations enabled the provision of veterinary care, special diets, and rehabilitation support for injured and orphaned wildlife. Many animals, particularly infants and subadults, required intensive care before being considered for release.

  • Release and Monitoring: Between March and May, a total of 8 monkeys (3 colobus and 5 vervets) were released and monitored in the wild, reinforcing the importance of long-term rehabilitation and follow-up. Monitoring ensures that released primates are adapting well and able to survive independently.

  • Transportation and Emergency Response: The organization’s rescue vehicle, supported by donations, remained instrumental in responding to emergencies. On average, two welfare or emergency trips were conducted daily, allowing timely rescues and follow-up visits. Funds helped cover fuel, maintenance, and other operational logistics.

  • June Highlights:
In June, 5 colobus monkeys were treated and released following full recovery. Additionally, 8 electrocution cases involving 6 colobus monkeys and 2 Sykes monkeys with minor injuries were successfully managed and the animals released back into their natural habitats. A vervet and a colobus sustained injuries from natural fighting and were also treated and released.

These efforts have significantly contributed to the protection and recovery of Kenya’s coastal primates. Continued donor support ensures that Colobus Conservation can remain vigilant and responsive in safeguarding vulnerable wildlife.
