Healing the Wild: Primate Rescue in Action

By Saumu Mohamed | Fundraising Manager

Between July and September 2025, Colobus Conservation continued its lifesaving mission to protect and rehabilitate primates and other wildlife along Kenya’s south coast. The organization responded to numerous emergency calls involving colobus monkeys, Sykes monkeys, vervets, baboons, a monitor lizard, and even an African Green Pigeon.

Across the three months, a total of 46 animal welfare cases were handled — 22 in July, 12 in August, and 12 in September. The leading causes of rescue included natural illness, electrocution, road traffic accidents, and dog attacks.

Rescue and Medical Care

Thanks to donor support, our team provided veterinary treatment, food, and rehabilitation to injured and orphaned primates. Several animals made full recoveries — including one colobus, one baboon, and one Sykes monkey in September, and a monitor lizard earlier in August — all successfully treated and released back to the wild.

Emergency Response and Transportation

Our rescue vehicle, funded and maintained through GlobalGiving donations, remained a vital lifeline for our emergency work. The team conducted daily response trips, ensuring rapid attendance to distress calls and increasing the survival chances of injured wildlife.

Electrocution and Road Safety

Electrocution remains a major threat to Diani’s primates, particularly the endangered Angolan colobus monkey. In August alone, seven cases of electrocution were recorded. Colobus and Sykes monkeys were the most affected, underscoring the need for insulated power lines and public awareness on wildlife-safe infrastructure.

Promoting Human–Wildlife Coexistence

Beyond rescues, Colobus Conservation continued to engage local communities through education and outreach programs. Training covered waste management, responsible behaviour around primates, and non-harmful pest control measures. These initiatives help reduce conflict, promote coexistence, and create safer environments for both wildlife and people.

Impact in Numbers (July–September 2025)

  • 46 wildlife welfare cases handled
  • 8 different species assisted, including primates, reptiles, and birds
  • 4 animals successfully treated and released back to the wild
  • Multiple electrocution and road traffic incidents attended
  • Ongoing community sensitization promoting peaceful coexistence

Looking Ahead

Colobus Conservation remains committed to creating a safe environment for both wildlife and people in Diani. Continued donor support through GlobalGiving ensures that we can keep rescuing, rehabilitating, and raising awareness — one animal, one community at a time.
