This weekend was a special one. If you remember Bugs, you will know how badly attacked he was when he came into care. Somehow, we don't know how, he lost his mum. There was a lot of rain that week so we suspect his burrow was flooded and he got seperated from his mum.
As wombat babies do, when they are scared, they will run to the nearest animal for shelter, sometimes a human, sometimes another wombat. But if he ran to the dominant male, he would have been attacked. And that is what we suspect happened to Bugs. He was badly attacked and very lucky to be alive.
A kind person was driving on this dark rural road and saw that she thought was a bunny rabbit sitting hunched in the middle of the road. Scared that he will get killed, she pulled over. This road is very popular for hooning where young drivers do burnouts and drive dangerously. If he was left there he stood no chance to survive. When she got close she realised that it was actually a baby wombat and scooped him up and brought him straight to me.
She named him Bugs :)
He was severely traumatised by his ordeal, very quiet, shivering, covered in mud and bitemarks and took a very long time to heal. He never screamed or fought me but was deathly scared of other wombats. He was later buddied with Holly, who was scared of humans. But he learned to trust again as Holly didnt hurt him.
Once his wound have healed he was looked after by carer Rob and his family, and this past weekend we moved Bugs to a large pre-release enclosure where he will have time to grow some more and become a big independent wombat, before we release him.
We are so thankful for the help we received in building this enclosure. He loves it, claimed the hollow log as his own and explored both of the burrows available. It is fit for a prince!
We are hoping that Bugs will grow to around 25kg and could be safely released at the end of summer, if he is ready.
Thank you to everyone who loves wombats, supports us and making a difference
