Thank you for choosing to support Ethiopian Wolves, the world’s rarest canid.
We have good news to report. After a successful breeding season, our team is thrilled to announce 21 of the packs we follow have welcomed new arrivals. Our monitors have counted a grand total of 71 pups.
This includes three puppies born to the only wolf family in Delanta in northern Ethiopia, known as the Addis Tesfa (New Hope) pack. Canine distemper wiped out Delanta’s wolves in 2017 but, in 2019 a breeding pair and six offspring recolonised the area. Those six are now sub-adults, foraging independently and, we’re so happy the young family is growing.
Also in northern Ethiopia, three wolf packs are monitored in Abune Yosef massif and two have been seen with four puppies. This is especially inspiring as there are few records of these wolves breeding. Their population was orally vaccinated against rabies after an outbreak in 2018 so, seeing numbers increase with a new generation is a great sign of recovery.
Meanwhile in Web Valley, we have monitored the Tarura Pack, led by famous 12-year-old female TAR02, since 2010. Last year, TAR02’s daughter moved to Fincha Habera waterfall to start a pack of her own. We are delighted to report she has now given birth to three healthy pups.
Thank you for your continued support for this vital conservation programme.
