Help to end menstrual exile in Nepal

Susanne's Visit
Our project manager Susanne Traud-Dubois visited Nepal end of last year to assess the progress of our initiative. Susanne is chairwoman of Karuna Germany and lives in Essen with her husband.

Her summary:
“Since 2021, our project in the districts of Bajhang and Bajura has successfully challenged the harmful Chhaupadi practice. Over 12,000 people were directly reached, with more than 19,000 benefiting overall. We’ve seen clear progress in menstrual health, hygiene, and gender norms—thanks to community engagement, behaviour change, and cooperation with local institutions.

Key contributors such as traditional healers, mothers-in-law, teachers, and local authorities helped break taboos and drive cultural change. Results include improved sanitation in 17 schools, more household funds for women’s health, and empowered female role models.

These efforts continue to resonate—through stronger local structures, more confident girls and women, and open discussions on menstruation, reproductive health, and gender equality. The foundation is laid; now the communities can continue on their own. The project in the first region was successfully concluded in March. Our project partner Green Tara Nepal remains active in the region and continues to offer support when needed.”

A follow-up project will launch in September this year in neighbouring villages of Bajhang and Bajura. Preparations are already underway: girls are receiving hygiene kits in schools, and girls’ clubs are being set up to promote open dialogue and healthy menstrual practices.
