Climate solutions that are disconnected from local realities can do more harm than good. MADRE leverages our access to policymaking spaces, like the Conference of the Parties, or “COP”, to ensure our partners’ frontline knowledge and leadership help shape the climate justice movement. In 2025, MADRE supported climate defender Winny Ouma from Kenya to participate in COP30. Winny is the director of Innovators for Climate Action, a MADRE-supported, LGBTQIA+-led climate justice organization in Nairobi, Kenya.

With support from your donations, MADRE resourced Winny and other COP30 delegates with travel support and accompaniment, including training on the COP's structure, negotiation process, and relevance to civil society, as well as networking and advocacy support to identify key events and advocacy opportunities.

As in many places around the world, LGBTQIA+ people in Nairobi, Kenya, are disproportionately impacted by climate disasters. At COP30, Winny moderated an event titled “Climate Policy for All: Advancing LGBTQ+ Inclusive and Gender-Transformative Climate Action.” Participating speakers and organizations included Out for Sustainability, the Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action, the Global Greengrants Fund, Women’s Environment & Development Organization, and Manusher Jonno Foundation. Winny led a discussion with speakers highlighting the urgent need for rights-based, intersectional, and inclusive climate policies that ensure marginalized voices are not left behind in global climate finance and decision-making.

At COP, Winny’s meaningful participation advanced grassroots climate adaptation and mitigation strategies that are inclusive of the LGBTQIA+ community. Your donations invest in the political leadership of those most impacted by climate disasters. Thank you!
