Help us to take care of 11 million trees in Cusco

By RUTH SOLEDAD BUSTAMANTE MAMANI | THE CHALLENGE - MORE TREES

Dear Donors,

We continue to affirm that the future of the planet is in the hands of family farmers.

Our main target remains to restore 13,300 hectares and establish 1,330 hectares in conservation areas.

This project will generate important environmental, economic and social benefits for rural communities.

The geographic scope of implementation covers 35 rural communities located in the districts of Huanoquite, Omacha, Accha, Ccapi, and Ccapacmarca, in the Cusco region of Peru.

We are currently in the third year of implementation.

During the 2024 forestry campaign, we completed our second planting campaign, successfully planting approximately 2,000 hectares. We are now focusing on caring for the trees, implementing measures to address potential risks such as droughts, wildfires, damage from animals, etc.

There is still a long road ahead, with much to learn alongside the participating communities and local governments.

Progress Achieved (up to September 2025)

  • Evaluation of plantation survival: We have carried out assessments of plantation establishment, obtaining an average survival rate of 80%, which is very positive given the adverse conditions in which the plantations are located. Including the main stakeholders of the project in the activities is very important.
  • Community training: We have conducted training sessions with communities on risk prevention and forest management.
  • Forest Fire Response: During this period, we have faced forest fires and worked intensively to protect reforested areas, with training from Civil Defense and the Regional Government's prevention area.
  • We have begun producing native species for the restoration of conservation areas. The first activity consisted of collecting native species seedlings for placement in nurseries.
  • New nurseries: We have installed 4 new nurseries in preparation for the 2026 forest campaign. There are still more nurseries to be installed.
  • Active community participation is essential to achieving the project's objectives, as their knowledge of the territory, commitment, and ownership of the processes ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of the actions implemented.
  • The analysis of the degraded ecosystem requires a lot of research and action. Our ecosystem degradation analysis continues to follow these steps:

    • Mapping and identification of degraded areas in the communities.
    • Diagnosis and selection of the Pachamama Raymi Methodology.
    • Identification of the reference ecosystem.
    • Consultation with local actors.

Restoring eroded soils is not only possible, but essential. Although it is more challenging than intervening in earlier stages, the social, environmental, and economic benefits of rehabilitating degraded land make it a smart and necessary investment. By supporting this effort, you’re not just helping to heal the Earth — you're empowering communities, protecting biodiversity, and building a more sustainable future. Every contribution makes a real and lasting impact.

Our next steps:

  • Continue monitoring plant survival and growth.
  • Proceed with the certification of forest plantations.
  • Generate economic income for communities through the sale of carbon credits.
  • Continue to strengthen community capacities in management and organization.

Thank you for your generosity and continued support. Together, we are creating a better future.
