The project seeks to provide support to approximately 200 LGBTIQ+ Jamaicans with rebuilding efforts in an effort to regain some normalcy in their lives post Hurricane Melissa. Through provision of this project, we seek to build the resilience of the Jamaican LGBTIQ+ community by strengthening social ties and community support. Investing in infrastructure repairs will aid in mitigating negative mental health impacts and strengthen community support networks.
Hurricane Melissa (category 5), to date the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall in Jamaica, left a path of destruction on October 27 & 28, 2025. Particularly western Jamaica suffered severe infrastructure damage, flooding and landslides. As a result LGBTQ+ Jamaicans, often excluded from general relief efforts, contend with displacement from their homes, loss of access to resources such as medical facilities, and an inability to resume work due to the current state of affairs.
ECADE in collaboration with EFAF (JFLAG) and CariFLAGS seeks to provide emergency relief assistance to LGBTQ+ Jamaicans impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Anticipated support should include, but is not limited to, housing repairs, access to mental health support, stipends to support food and clean water, shelter, groceries, clothing, sanitary products, medical care and support.
Increase resilience and survival opportunities for approximately 200 LGBTQ+ Jamaicans. Rebuilding efforts supports LGBTQ+ Jamaicans' ability to rebuild and improve their lives post Hurricane Melissa. Through the implementation of this project, we demonstrate solidarity to the Jamaican LGBTQ+ community and strengthen our social ties. Investing in infrastructural repairs will aid in mitigating negative mental health impacts and strengthen community support networks.
