Key Updates about ILGA World and our support to LGBTI communities worldwide
A half-year update about key activities between January and June 2024.
The first half of 2024 was marked by substantial progress andchallenging setbacks inthe global context, with growing anti-rights and anti-gender movements and budgetary cuts in the UN, among other things. Our work has required us to adapt and respond to the needs of the hour.
ILGA World led a series of global campaigns for LGBTI Communities throughout the year, including coordinating IDAHOBIT globally and various Pride campaigns in June.
There have been significant movements in the global and local context regarding SOGIESC rights. One of the biggest wins for our communities was on April 4, 2024, when the Intersex Resolution on Combatting Discrimination, Violence and Harmful Practices against Intersex Persons was successfully adopted by a vote of 24 in favour, none against, and 23 abstentions. This win was a culmination of multiple years of intense advocacy led by intersex activists and the global intersex community. Before adopting the resolution, we also supported the intersex advocacy week. This advocacy week, similar to our other advocacy weeks, focused on supporting activists in informal negotiations of the text around the resolution and having bilateral conversations with different states about promoting intersex rights at the UN.
A significant moment of joy and recognition for us during this period was when the ILGA World Database was awarded a Silver Medal at the prestigious Anthem Awards and was acknowledged among this year's most impactful work, inspiring action in communities globally. The medal was awarded in the ‘Human and Civil Rights category’ for ‘Best Use of Data’. Launched in 2021 by The Webby Awards, the Anthem Awards aim to honour excellence on the Internet and recognise the purpose-driven work of individuals, companies, and organisations worldwide.
During this period, we made significant progress in preparing for andlaunching new initiatives, including fundingto support local implementation of the UN’s SOGIESC advocacy results at the city, national, and regional levels. Another significant milestone for us was that, since 1 January 2024, ILGA World has been hosting the ERC secretariat.
This period saw usundertake multiple other actions, from supporting LGBTI+ Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) at the Human Rights Council, Commission on Status of Women, and High-Level Political Form to launching informative learning videos on SDGs and membership-focused capacity-strengthening webinarsto launching our first audio-visual campaign-focused micro-grant and hosting and activating the SOGIESC listserv. More on our work is available on our newly revamped website.
During the first half of the year, ILGA World prepared for its upcoming World Conference to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, in partnership with GenderDynamix and Iranti. ILGA World and partners are supporting over 125 people from more than 100 countries to attend this vital global gathering for LGBTI Movements and Communities.
