Our Creating Healthy Futures program empowers 5th and 6th grade students in Santiago Atitlán to take charge of their health and become leaders in their community. In response to rising rates of obesity and chronic illness, this culturally relevant program provides education on nutrition, hygiene, mental health, and disease prevention—delivered in a way that reflects the values and needs of the Indigenous Maya community.
The program emphasizes peer leadership, with 6th graders mentoring younger students to build communication skills and strengthen their role as health advocates. Students also take part in community health fairs to promote healthy behaviors and reduce stigma around sensitive health topics.
Launching as a pilot in 2026 and expanding to five schools by 2027, the program will reach over 60 students annually. It is built for long-term impact, integrating local educators, community input, and ongoing evaluation to ensure sustainability and success. By building leadership skills and promoting lifelong healthy habits, Creating Healthy Futures is an investment in the well-being of both youth and the wider community.
Will you join us and support this project? We need your help to impact the health of these children, their families and the communities they live in!
Thank you!
