In Villa Garzón, Putumayo, going to school isn’t always as simple as “going.” For many students, it means walking along muddy trails that change with the rain, waiting for transportation that never arrives, or choosing between bus fare and food. When a household’s economy is fragile and work is unstable, school competes every day with very real urgencies.
And while it happens here, it also happens across much of the country: in Colombia, nearly half of the children who start first grade do not make it to eleventh. In 2023, 335,000 students left the school system. Inequality is stark: while most students in Bogotá manage to graduate on time, in departments like Vaupés, Vichada, or Guainía fewer than half do. These are young people who drift away not for a single reason, but because of a build-up of obstacles that, little by little, push them out.
In a survey of 2,180 students across 17 departments, distance to school appears as one of the most frequent reasons for considering dropping out. Economic and family challenges add to that, along with academic difficulties. But something has not gone out: 91% believe education can open up a better future for them and their families. The desire is there. What is often missing are the conditions to sustain it.
We know dropout is not driven by the school alone. But we also know this: when the classroom connects with real life, when the curriculum speaks to the territory, and when a teacher helps learning feel worth it, something shifts. Staying in school stops being a statistic and becomes a story that can still be written.

“Maestros que inspiran, jóvenes que permanecen”

En Villa Garzón, Putumayo, ir al colegio no siempre es tan simple como “ir”. Para muchos estudiantes significa caminar por trochas que cambian con la lluvia, esperar un transporte que no llega o elegir entre el pasaje y la comida. Cuando la economía del hogar es frágil y el trabajo es inestable, la escuela compite todos los días con urgencias muy reales.
Y aunque pasa aquí, también pasa en gran parte del país: en Colombia, casi la mitad de los niños que comienzan primero no llegan a once. En 2023, 335.000 estudiantes abandonaron el sistema. La desigualdad es enorme: mientras en Bogotá la mayoría logra graduarse a tiempo, en departamentos como Vaupés, Vichada o Guainía menos de la mitad lo consigue. Son jóvenes que se van alejando no por una sola razón, sino por una suma de obstáculos que, poco a poco, los empujan hacia afuera.
En un sondeo a 2.180 estudiantes de 17 departamentos, la distancia al colegio aparece como una de las causas más frecuentes para pensar en abandonar. Se suman los problemas económicos y familiares, y las dificultades académicas. Pero hay algo que no se ha apagado: el 91% cree que la educación puede abrirles un mejor futuro a ellos y a sus familias. El deseo está. Lo que falta, muchas veces, son las condiciones para sostenerlo.
Por eso, en la Institución Educativa Puerto Umbría empezamos un trabajo de dos años para que la escuela vuelva a ser un lugar que haga sentido. Acompañamos a los docentes para fortalecer sus prácticas pedagógicas, y también su bienestar emocional, porque un maestro que se siente cuidado puede volver a inspirar. Y con los estudiantes trabajamos proyecto de vida: ponerle nombre a sus capacidades, imaginar rutas posibles y construir motivos para quedarse.
Sabemos que la deserción no depende solo de la escuela. Pero también sabemos esto: cuando el aula conecta con la vida, cuando el currículo dialoga con el territorio y cuando un docente logra que aprender valga la pena, algo cambia. La permanencia deja de ser una estadística y vuelve a ser una historia posible.
Ahí es donde tu apoyo puede marcar la diferencia: sostener a quienes hoy están luchando por no renunciar a su educación, y convertir la escuela en esa promesa creíble por la que vale la pena seguir.
