A School Deeply Committed to the Environment

Under the warm blanket of dawn, the village of Mingueo in La Guajira, northern Colombia, awakens with the promise of a new day.

The Caribbean breeze—silent witness to nature’s secrets—carries with it the soft murmur of good news. Life slowly stirs in this corner of the world as the first rays of sunlight gently touch its streets.

In the northern part of this village, part of the municipality of Dibulla, stands the school Institución Educativa Técnica Rural Agropecuaria de Mingueo. It is here that we have taken one of our first steps through ESCALA, our school retention program aimed at reducing dropout rates in grades 8 through 11 by promoting and teaching socioemotional competencies.

This is not just any school—it holds a special place in the hearts of its students, who see it as the first door opening to their future.

As an 11th-grade student, beautifully puts it:

“It’s like the first step you take toward achieving your goals. What I love most is that we are an agricultural school, so we gain deeper knowledge about soil and plants. That opens up our minds and will definitely help us later on.”

At this school, the seeds of knowledge and emotion are sown side by side, nurturing not only minds—but dreams.

At the heart of this school lies a strong bond with agriculture and a deep love for the land. This connection is not only felt but lived—reflected in its institutional projects and, especially, in its Environmental Education Project. Rooted in both urgent and long-term needs, this project embodies the school’s genuine concern for the planet, raising awareness of climate change through classroom-driven action. This approach is particularly vital in rural areas, where daily life is already filled with challenges.

Here, the commitment to the environment is paired with another deeply rooted value: the emotional well-being of its students. Here, education is understood as a holistic journey—one that strengthens not only learning outcomes and best practices, but also the socioemotional tools students need to grow as individuals and as part of their community.

To support this mission, we began working hand in hand with the school through “Step by Step”, a methodology designed to develop socioemotional competencies in the classroom. It provides practical tools for teachers to nurture these skills and create safe, inclusive learning spaces.

We introduced the ESCALA program and the “Step by Step” approach to the school principal, teachers, and parents, who expressed great enthusiasm about learning how to promote socioemotional competencies. Their interest mirrors the care and commitment they show every morning, as they welcome students into their classrooms.

“What I love is that the teachers don’t just stick to the lesson plans—they add activities that inspire us to keep learning. They try new ways to make class enjoyable,”  says an 11th-grade student.

And it’s precisely from words like this and the passion of the school staff, that we recognize an incredible opportunity: to keep walking alongside these rural youth as they study, grow, and sow the seeds of their future.

Each step taken on this meaningful journey toward socioemotional learning strengthens the social fabric of rural Colombia. Every gesture of support for ESCALA, every contribution, becomes a building block—laying the foundation for more empathetic, resilient communities where dropping out of school is no longer an option, but a challenge we overcome together.

Share this valuable initiative with your friends, acquaintances, and family, and join us in continuing this crucial work for the benefit of education and the progress of rural youth. Your support is essential to keep driving this important effort and building a better future for these communities.
