Teaching with Heart in the South of the Country

In Puerto Umbría, a small village in the municipality of Villagarzón in the south of Colombia, the thick green of Putumayo hide stories of harship, but also of resilience and hope. This land, marked by oil, cattle ranching, and the scars of armed conflict, is also home to the dreams of children and young people. Those dreams are kept alive by their families, who remain the strongest force pushing them to imagine a better future.

In 2022, Fundación Barco arrived in Puerto Umbría to walk alongside the teachers and students of the Rural School. It was not just another project, but a commitment to help children stay in school by transforming the way teaching and learning happen, and above all, by encouraging students to keep going and complete their education.

The situation was alarming. About 13% of students were considering leaving school. Many had lost motivation, the results on the grade 11 national exams were low, and the education available did not fully respond to the needs of the community. Teachers, too, were struggling—tired, often feeling alone and unseen. Yet they stayed strong: committed, eager to learn, and determined to give their best. That is why our first step was simply to listen.

Together, the foundation and the school,  mapped out the challenges and then built a path for change: innovative training for teachers, workshops to care for their health and emotional well-being, spaces to rethink the curriculum, and, above all, a living approach that connects the classroom with everyday life.

Fundación Barco also worked with students from ninth to eleventh grade on something vital—their life projects. They wanted them to reconnect with their dreams, to see school again as a place of opportunity. Slowly, change began to show. The dropout intention fell to just 2.3% by 2025. Even more powerful, many students began to talk about their future with renewed hope.

What happened in Puerto Umbría was not only a technical intervention. It was a human process, full of shared learning and commitment. Because here, education is not only about books—it is about listening, walking together, and building with the community. That was the seed Fundación Barco want it to plant.
