In the small mountain village of Pleshisht, lives a family. The father is 52, the mother 39, and they have three children, ages 11, 8, and 6. The paternal grandmother also lives with them, as is common in these remote areas of Albania – the entire family all under one roof.
All three of the children are enrolled in school, in whatever capacity they can be in such a small village. The youngest attends preschool and the older two are in 3rd and 4th grade.
To many of us in the developed world, this sounds like a pretty typical family situation. However, this family has been thrown into a world of hardship…
Both parents are unemployed.
The oldest child recently had to undergo surgery for a hernia.
The grandmother has blood pressure issues.
She also has broken her leg; the same one, twice. And due to the fractures not healing correctly, her leg has been rendered nearly useless, making her almost unable to walk.
Despite all these challenges, NG’s Social and Medical Improvement team has stepped in to help. We assist where we can with food and hygiene supplies to ease the financial strain, ensuring that the children can stay in school and the grandmother receives some level of care.
This family’s story is not unique. Many families in rural Albania face similar struggles, caught between poverty, poor access to healthcare, and limited opportunities. By walking alongside them – practically, medically, and socially – we are helping to restore dignity, stability, and hope. One family at a time, NG is building a stronger, healthier future for communities that might otherwise be left behind.
This kind of transformation is only possible because of the generosity of people like you. Your support enables us to reach families in remote villages with vital medical care, food, and encouragement. Every gift helps us continue this work – ensuring that children can stay in school, grandparents receive treatment, and parents find hope for tomorrow.
