A Focus on GBV Awareness for Parents of the Deaf

By Blessing Chaipa | Director

Riding on its commitment to empower parents to create strong support systems for Deaf boys and girls regarding every aspect of their well-being, including issues related to gender-based violence (GBV), Nzeve recently held another GBV session for parents of Deaf children and youth as a safeguarding measure.

In October, Nzeve hosted a GBV session for 22 parents, focusing on enhancing their roles in addressing GBV-related matters. The session highlighted critical topics such as identifying GBV signs and understanding how to report incidents. This enabled parents to recognize potential indicators of GBV and learn about the various pathways for reporting. The discussion also addressed the health risks of STIs and HIV linked to abuse and why it is important to report on time.

Furthermore, the session underscored the significance of fo open communication and strong relationships with children. Parents were encouraged to create an environment where their children feel safe to share their concerns.

During the session, one parent shared, “With the different pictures of STIs that you showed me, I now understand the importance of noticing changes in my child and reporting any concerns as soon as possible.” Another parent remarked, “Today, I have learned that I am my child's advocate, and it is important for me to learn my child's language so that I can effectively protect her.”

This session has addressed the importance of parental involvement in safeguarding children from harm and highlighted the critical need for parents to report any violations of their children’s rights. It was only possible because of our supporting donors
