Supporting the Supporters: Stress Management for Parents of Deaf Children

By Blessing Chaipa | Director

Nzeve recently conducted a stress management session for 19 parents of Deaf children and youth as part of its commitment to strengthening parents as the first line of support. The session recognized the emotional and practical challenges many parents face, particularly those newly adjusting to raising a Deaf child.

The session provided a safe space for parents to reflect on their experiences and understand that managing stress is essential for effective caregiving. Key topics included understanding stress, recognizing its symptoms, and practical strategies for managing it. Discussions also emphasized the importance of communication with Deaf children, parental advocacy, and active engagement in their children’s development.

Parents were encouraged to practice self-care, seek peer support, and access available services. A key message shared was: “You are the expert of your child.” The session reinforced the importance of parental well-being in supporting and safeguarding Deaf children.
