Soap-Making & Hygiene Training

By Ruth Nakalembe | Program Officer

1. Introduction

During this Quarter , the project implemented a key skill-building intervention focused on liquid soap-making for adolescent girls, aligned with our broader goal of promoting menstrual hygiene and self-reliance. Out of a quarterly target of 50 girls, we successfully trained 25 girls (50%) due to scheduling and logistical challenges. The training included both theoretical and hands-on sessions, where girls gained practical skills in hygiene and small-scale production of liquid soap. This activity is contributing positively to personal hygiene management and generating interest in economic empowerment through soap sales.

2. Achievements

  • 25 girls trained in liquid soap-making out of the quarterly target of 50 (50% completion).

Girls learned how to make, bottle, and store liquid soap safely.

  • 1 hygiene education session held, meeting the quarterly target (100% completion).

Integrated lessons on menstrual hygiene, handwashing, and personal care.

  • 22 out of 25 trained girls (88%) successfully demonstrated the ability to make liquid soap independently.

3. Lessons Learned

  1. Smaller Cohorts Increase Impact: Smaller groups resulted in more individualized attention and better skill uptake.
  2. Economic Empowerment Boosts Engagement: Linking hygiene education with income-generating skills increases motivation among girls

4. Monitoring and Evaluation Highlights

  • Participant Feedback: 96% of the girls reported satisfaction with the training; most showed enthusiasm to continue.
  • Skill Replication: 22 out of 25 girls successfully demonstrated soap-making without support during follow-up sessions.
  • Behavioral Change: Preliminary follow-up suggests improved hand hygiene and use of soap among participants and their households.

5. Conclusion

While in this quarter we met only half of the target in terms of numbers, the depth of learning and empowerment among the 25 girls trained was significant. This quarter served as a foundation for scaling up in the next quarter, with strong indications that this approach is improving hygiene practices and sparking income-generating interest among adolescent girls.
