Project Title: Indigenous Women Access Local Markets
Indigenous women face various economic, social and cultural barriers. The market in general is controlled by men, there is little room for women's participation and especially when it comes to indigenous women.
At Red de Commercialization Comunitaria Alternativa (Red COMAL), our mission is to promote fair market relations for small-scale producers. We seek to strengthen the community economy through the production of nutritious food and the commercialization of products in local markets.
Main achievements:
In the first quarter with the few funds raised as part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the COMAL Network, the national farmers fair was held. Seventy-six producers participated, including 36 women, mostly Lenca indigenous women, members of community organizations and the Honduran social movement.
The producers offered a wide range of farmers and handicraft products, including: various vegetables, fruit, processed products, basic grains, eggs, dairy products, reed, palm, mezcal and clay handicrafts. It has been a space for exchange between producers and consumers.
The women had the opportunity to showcase their products, exchange experiences and knowledge about their organizational and productive processes and the practices and technologies for adapting to climate change that they are promoting in their communities. This event also contributed to the generation of income for women.
On behalf of the indigenous and farmers women accompanied by Red COMAL, we would like to express our deep gratitude to all the donors who, through GlobalGiving, contribute to the creation of market channels for farmers and artisan products. We seek to strengthen the community economy through the production of nutritious food and the commercialization of products in local markets.
