On 28 September 2018, the Indonesian island of Sulawesi was hit by a series of earthquakes, including a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, and a tsunami. Major population centers, including Palu city and Donggala regency, saw wide-scale devastation, including collapsed buildings, landslides, and power shortages. More than 1,200 people were killed and 48,000 displaced from their homes to more than 100 evacuation centers. As many as 1.5 million people have been affected.
IsraAID deployed an emergency response team to Indonesia to provide urgently needed support in ensuring access to safe water.
Upon project initiation, IsraAID WASH experts provided training in NUF Water Filtration Systems for three members of our local community-based partner. They will be responsible for handing over and training the water committees of the two villages recieving the NUF-- some 400 direct beneficiaries.
IsraAID also partnered with other NGOs on the ground to distribute emergency relief items. 70 families received a kit with cooking supplies, educational activities for children, hygiene items, and a tent.
The IsraAID emergency response team reached a remote makeshift camp, deep in the jungle where 85 people from a nearby village took refuge after the earthquake and tsunami.
“The people were so scared that they all fled to the mountain and remain there, in extremely dire conditions,” explained Indonesia Head of Mission, Juliette.
The team provided them with water filters and offered training on best practices for maintaining hygiene. Together with the community, the IsraAID WASH expert built emergency latrines, a tipi tap, and handed out hygiene stickers to remind residents of key concepts to prevent the spread of disease.
