Summary

Over 160,000 refugees and asylum seekers reside in Greece, working to rebuild their lives, gain stable employment, and provide for their families. For many refugees, their dreams and careers were interrupted when they were forced to flee. Many refugees face discrimination, a lack of access to employment, and difficulty converting credentials to national standards. We aim to address these barriers by facilitating opportunities to develop skills and acting as an intermediary with employers.

Challenge

Structural discrimination, isolation, and language barriers create significant challenges to socio-economic integration for refugees trying to rebuild their lives in safety. There is a need for language and literacy courses as well as employment intermediaries for refugees to access job opportunities. For 3,000 refugees and asylum seekers in the isolated Ritsona and Malakasa Camps, there are no training programmes in the surrounding areas and few stable, long-term employment opportunities.

Solution

LHR and our partners provide Greek and English classes at the Sama Community Centre for refugees living in Malakasa and Ritsona Camps. We aim to expand informal education by offering training in areas such as literacy, technology, carpentry, and by offering transportation to and from partner-held workshops. With funding, we will hire an employment intermediary to help refugees navigate the labour market, convert credentials, advocate for better working conditions, and challenge discrimination.

Long-Term Impact

By addressing significant gaps in education and employment access, this project will support the socio-economic integration and autonomy of refugees in Greece with 1,000 new language learning students and 100 refugees enrolled in training workshops by the end of 2026. The goal of this project is to support refugees and asylum seekers in rebuilding their lives and pursuing their dreams, all while supporting both local and refugee communities.
