The Child Center
As well as providing mental health support to the children living in the camp, our team facilitates a range of recreational activities which give the children an important creative release and allows them to 'just be children'! This month we introduced karate classes and a scouting club twice a week, as well as weekly film screenings and creative drawing sessions! The center also offers imagination drawing which helps both in helping children cope with stress and trauma as well as harnessing children`s talent. Other activities included; skipping rope, craft, singing, fashion show and modelling, poetry, storytelling and outdoor games with provided play items like the merry go round equipment.
A few numbers:
During the month of October 2017, we recorded 3432 boys and 1852 girls at the Centre. The children attending the center are of all ages:
The Centre runs two shifts in a day, Monday to Saturday. The afternoon shift saw a significant increase in number of children. In the morning the number of girls attending is significantly low however it improves as the day progresses.
Nala, one of the children who frequents the center, said that she really appreciates how the facilitators push and encourage the children to take responsibility for themselves and reconcile any problems that they have with their peers in the camp.
The Medical Clinic
The medical clinics and hospitals in Kakuma are substantially under-staffed and with scares resources. IsraAID's team provides crucial training, equipment and specialist volunteer doctors to meet the needs on the ground. In September, our visiting doctors facilitated an epilepsy and ultra-sound training for the medical staff in the camp.
One of the doctors also held a lecture on epilepsy and ultra-sounds. IsraAID's medical program in Kenya hosts volunteer doctors from Israel and the US, who provide direct medical care to patients, and specialist training to the camp's medical staff.
IsraAID Kenya also welcomes a new Country Director, Or – Or started his first week with team building activities for the team in Kakuma – see pictures and welcome Or!!
Thank you for following our activities and for supporting IsraAID Kenya!
