Lighthouse Relief began on Lesvos in September 2015, providing emergency shoreline response to people fleeing violence, war and persecution. Our trauma-informed approach has remained adaptable and sensitive to the evolving needs of refugees and asylum seekers. Today, we collaborate with local NGOs to offer psychosocial support through sport & safe spaces, including language learning, self-defense, and leadership opportunities to residents of the largest camps in Greece - Ritsona and Malakasa.
Greece has remained an active entry point for people seeking safety. In 2024, ~69K refugees arrived in Greece - the highest number since 2019. On the mainland, Ritsona and Malakasa refugee camps are surrounded by concrete walls, with controlled exit systems, limited to no public transport, and few NGOs authorized to operate within the camps. Being able to leave the insecure, overcrowded camp environments to access safe spaces is vital to the mental and physical health of people seeking refuge.
With additional funding we will be able to continue our sports and activity sessions for women, children and young people living in refugee camps - where children and adults alike can play, unwind, socialize, and develop skills. We believe in the power of sport and play to change lives. Our team is determined to facilitate access to activities for residents of Ritsona and Malakasa which promote their physical and mental wellbeing, helping them regain confidence, happiness, and self-determination
For those affected by displacement, access to recreational activities can help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, while encouraging connections, interpersonal communication, and a stronger sense of belonging. By attending our sessions, women and children can access safe spaces outside the camp, and young adults can learn to integrate with their peers and local community through shared sporting activities - helping participants on their journey to rebuild safe, full lives.
