These three children, with your help, meant they could access treatment for their cancer and have now been able to go back home. They will continue to have 3 month reviews.
How are we doing at KHC?
It has been a difficult time for many charities, especially since the withdrawal of support by USAID and the Centre of Disease Infections for HIV and TB projects. It means for us at KHC that we are unable to provide the same level of support to these clients. However, we will continue to identify and approach organisations that are supportive of the type of work that we do in our communities, so that we can continue to provide medical support for the poorest and most vulnerable people.
July Bonus Day
We are extremely grateful to GlobalGiving for their continued support with running campaign initiatives to help projects like ours, to raise funds. In fact there is a July Bonus Day campaign on: Starting Wednesday 10:00am (EDT) 16 July 2025 until Thursday 10:00am 17 July.
Donations to be eligible to receive Incentive Funds from @GlobalGiving, must be at least US$100 and up to US$1,000 per unique donor.
The donations received from this campign will provide much needed mosquito nets for the beds of the children at the new hostel, and other necessities.

More recently GlobalGiving awarded us with a flexible grant in the amount of $15,000 from their Community Aid Fund. KHC is extremely grateful for this additional support. These funds will be used to purchase essential medicine for the children at the hostel, provide counselling for the families. and provide meals for the children and their caregivers. Also some funds contributed to the new premises for the children. This generous grant will make a difference.
The New Hope Children’s hostel premises were rented and last year we were informed by the owner that they were selling the premises. In October we started a campaign to raise funds to buy these premises and create a permanent home for the hostel. We were overwhelmed with the response and generosity from the local communities and our international friends. Unfortunately, the owner substantially increased the original sale price and we were unable to proceed but we did have a Plan B and identified another suitable property nearby. We are in the process of buying it and converting it to a hostel and plan to move in at the end of July. As you can see from the photos our new home will provide more space for the hostel.
This has been a dream come true and due to your support, prayers and faith it kept us going in our pursuit of achieving what we felt in many ways was an unattainable goal. Thank you so much.
The following story is why our hostel provides such an important service to children with cancer.……
Elijah, who is 7 years old, arrived at New Hope Children’s Hostel in March 2023.
In 2021, he developed a small, painless swelling on the left side of his neck and as it was painless, his mother didn’t worry at first. However, when the swelling grew in the following year, she took him to the local hospital. He was treated for an abscess but there was no improvement. His doctors suspected cancer and referred Elijah to Mulago National Referral Hospital.
A biopsy was done, by Ugandan Institute of Cancer (UIC) and at this time, Elijah’s mother, was heavily pregnant, and worried about where to stay and how to care for her son, especially after losing a one-year-old child and being unsupported by the father of her unborn baby. Thanks to the social workers at Mulago, she was referred to New Hope Children’s Hostel.
At the hostel, the family found comfort, accommodation, food and were provided with counselling support. Elijah was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and began six cycles of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. He completed his treatment in September 2023 and is now on three-month reviews and he remains in good health. During her stay, Elijah’s mother safely delivered her baby with the help of the hostel team. Nurses cared for both mother and baby, provided meals and ensured she was well-fed, and caregivers of other children at the hostel supported Elijah when he had treatment at the hospital.
His mother is immensely grateful for the love and care the family received at New Hope Children’s Hostel as without this support it may have had a different outcome.
Year to date 165 children have stayed at the hostel, however sadly 15 children died and our thoughts and prayers go out to these families during such a difficult time. We had 51 children complete their treatment and are in remission which is wonderful news. The friendships and support that the children and their caregivers receive from each other is also very important during these difficult times.
Thank you for your continued support in helping these amazing children.
