New Hope Children's Hostel Quarterly Update

Children celebrate being a cancer survivor
Children celebrate being a cancer survivor

Something worth celebrating….

As you know we work closely with the Ugandan Cancer Institute (UCI) to identify families of children with cancer, from mainly rural communities, who desperately need accommodation, meals and transport so that their children can access treatment with UCI.

Recently UCI acknowledged 7 children who stayed at the New Hope Children's hostel, and  who have beaten their cancer and can now continue on their journey in life. Each child received a medal and certificate to represent the strength and resilience of fighting this disease and completing their treatment.

This journey with the families and children also requires the support of the palliative care nurses, caregivers and KHC staff. And you our supporters who through in-kind donations of food, medical supplies and financial donations make it possible for us to continue to provide this much needed support for these children. Thank you!

Overview:

Number of children who stayed at the hostel from January to October: 231

Number of children who completed treatment 35 and those in remission: 15

Number of children who died: 16

What these figures do not reflect is the human tragedy that cancer brings to the family when their child does not survive. It is also felt by the children and caregivers at the time in the hostel and of course the wonderful staff who build such a strong relationship with them.

What we can do is to continue to provide the support and care for those children that require palliative care, and show that we are there for them.

People working together with a shared goal and common purpose can make the impossible, possible.

Welcome to our new home

KHC is extremely grateful to so many individuals and groups as through your donations it made it possible for us to secure a permanent home for children with cancer so that they can continue to access medical treatment. Of course there were renovations needed to prepare the space to house the 30 children and their caregivers.

The current children and caregivers have settled in and are enjoying the new space.

KHC Celebrates 18 years

Recently KHC celebrated 18 years of providing holistic care to patients living with HIV/AID, Tuberculosis and Cancer. What a great milestone. And we are grateful to the many individuals and organisations that have been with us on our journey which commenced in 2007.

There is a lot going on in the world right now and we are managing in an increasingly different world. This year has been one of the most challenging for us as we have had to reduce some of the medical services we provide to our patients and also we had to make the heartbreaking decision of letting some of our staff go. Most of our staff have been with KHC for many years and have contributed enormously to the quality of care and the amazing reputation that the organisation has built over the years.

Through the faith, love and support that you provide us we will continue our journey with these children..
