"Kore" means to "provide backup and support". That's what Haiti's communities need now more than ever. Kore Haiti focuses on supporting community economic development initiatives that help communities to keep thriving despite the challenges that they face. Its focus is three-fold: local food production, cooperative group savings, community projects that communities themselves have identified as their way to combat poverty and achieve progress. Life goes on in Haiti despite the gang violence, the political instability and the staggering socio-economic impact that both have on families and communities. More than a million internally displaced people have left Port-au-Prince because of the loss of their homes and livelihood. Many are living in the streets or in abandoned buildings. Most have left for the provinces to take refuge with relatives. More than half the population suffers from severe food insecurity and hunger.
Kore Haiti focuses on supporting economic development initiatives that help communities to thrive despite the challenges that they face: Initiatives focused on increasing local food production and transformation- tackling food insecurity, hunger and malnutrition The expansion and reinforcement of the "Mutuelles Solidarites", a cooperative community savings program allowing low-income community members to access capital Community led selected projects that combat poverty and achieve progress
The project will support hundreds of community members to: increase their crops and their revenues; feed and support their families; maintain better health; build a better future for their themselves, their children as well as their communities. According to the United Nations, 67% of IDPs move to the Southern Peninsula of Haiti, a region that is not ready for such an influx. Focusing on the economic development of the region and increasing its food production are critical.
