The COPADET organization presented the Lambi Fund of Haiti with a Cassava Production Project to help planters (members of the organization) produce more cassava to support the organization’s existing cassava project. The organization needed to produce more cassava because there was a high demand for the produce in the community. In this sense, the project aimed to increase the production of cassava whilst increasing their income in order to make this cassava production project more sustainable.
The project started approximately 8 months ago with 39 farmers receiving a fund of 20,000.00 gourdes (appx. $150 USD) each to start their gardens. The funds were used to purchase the necessary materials, to carry out soil preparation work, and to establish the plantations. The first gardens was established in October 2024, however, there were heavy floods in November 2024 that destroyed approximately 60% of the plantations.
The remaining plantations survived the November 2024 flooding and are thriving. The farmers obtained a harvest after 6 months of planting (May-June 2025), which allowed them to sell 131,550.00 gourdes (appx. $1000 USD) of cassava for processing. Other people in the community, who were not part of the Organization, who had successful gardens, also sold their cassava, thus keeping the cassava farm functioning during this difficult time when production was declining.
Currently, the project has begun its second phase of execution. Farmers are buying seeds to start planting again in June 2025. More than 30 farmers have already completed the soil preparation work. This work is being done collectively in small groups to increase efficiency and reduce overall burden of the tasks. At the end of the year, the farmers expect to yield a good harvest provided that there are no unforeseen issues such as natural disasters or droughts.
This support to strengthen the cassava farm gives the organization much more visibility in the community because many people in the area are more motivated to plant cassava due to the high demand and the certainty of selling their crops. In addition, the farmers are tackling the issue of food insecurity in their community. Hopefully, this activity will increase the longevity of the project. The organization would like to invest more into the production of their other produce activities which is the processing of peanuts.
The regional monitor of the Lambi Fund of Haiti notes that the organization has become more dynamic. There are restructuring works being done within the organization. There are more collaborative works in all the activities that the organization is conducting. This project creates a lot of hope among the members of the organization who believe that they can be an important factor in the long term in implementing a sustainable development plan for their community in which they live.
