ASsIST provides vital information and legal aid to asylum seekers, recognised refugees, those who have the protection of the State and those who are under threat of deportation in Greece. Most of our services are delivered digitally as our beneficiaries reside in closed camps or do not have money to spend on travel to our offices. Our trauma-informed, holistic approach supports our beneficiaries' welfare by referrals to providers of other essential social welfare services.
Asylum seekers arriving in Greece face a legal system that is nearly impossible to navigate without support. The right to legal aid is guaranteed by law but, in practice, state-funded legal assistance is severely under-resourced and difficult to access. Most asylum seekers never receive proper legal support before interviews; a crucial moment that often determines the outcome of their case. Language barriers, trauma from past persecution, and poor living conditions also contribute.
ASsIST provides real-time legal information and support via WhatsApp in 10+ languages. Our trained team includes refugees and asylum seekers, helping people understand procedures, prepare for interview and access free welfare services in their native language. We offer clear, confidential guidance that enables individuals to make informed decisions and navigate the asylum system more effectively.
