For many, a home is a place of safety, belonging, and rest. For Keamogetswe i, it was something she and her children had lived without for far too long.
At just 25 years old, Keamogetswe is a young mother of three whose life has been shaped by hardship, loss, and resilience. After losing her mother in 2022, her world was turned upside down. With no stable source of income and no permanent place to stay, she was forced to move from one relative’s home to another, carrying her children and their few belongings with her. One of her children was taken in by the paternal family, not because of lack of love, but because she was simply too young and vulnerable to cope alone at the time.
Each move came with new challenges—overcrowded living spaces, strained family relationships, and the constant anxiety of not knowing where she and her children would sleep next. At times, even basic necessities such as food and clothing were uncertain. The emotional toll was heavy, but Keamogetswe carried on, driven by a quiet determination to protect her children and create a better future for them.
Her journey intersected with Lesedi la Batho during a young mothers’ support group outreach in her community. What began as a routine engagement quickly revealed a story of deep vulnerability and strength. Through one-on-one sessions with the Outreach Coordinator, Keamogetswe shared her struggles—her limited literacy skills, her lack of stable employment, and her strong desire to learn and become self-reliant. Despite everything stacked against her, she spoke with passion about wanting to work with her hands and build something meaningful for herself.
Lesedi la Batho supported her to explore skills development opportunities, guiding her toward agricultural training suited to her abilities and interests. However, as conversations continued into 2025, it became clear that no skills training could truly succeed while she and her children remained without a stable home. Housing insecurity had become the greatest barrier to her progress and wellbeing.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, Lesedi la Batho took a holistic social relief approach. The team facilitated a difficult but necessary family mediation between Keamogetswe and her older sister to discuss the possibility of building a structure in the parental yard. Emotions were high, pain was voiced, and years of tension surfaced—but through open dialogue, understanding slowly emerged. In the end, the family reached an agreement, allowing Keamogetswe to build a room for herself and her children.
With the support of Rays of Hope, funds were raised to turn this agreement into reality. What followed was a powerful transformation. Brick by brick, a low-cost home took shape. Family members who had once been divided stood together during the construction process, offering support and even allowing electricity to be shared from the main house—small gestures that carried deep meaning.
For Keamogetswe, watching the walls rise was more than witnessing a building project. It was the moment her children finally had a safe space to sleep, to play, and to feel secure. It was the moment dignity was restored.
Today, the low-cost home stands as a symbol of hope and new beginnings. Keamogetswe no longer lives in constant fear of displacement. Her children have stability, and she has the foundation needed to focus on her personal development, skills training, and long-term independence. While challenges remain, she now faces them from a place of strength rather than survival.
This intervention reminds us that social relief is not only about emergency assistance—it is about restoring dignity, rebuilding confidence, and creating pathways out of vulnerability. Through compassion, partnership, and community support, one young mother’s life has been changed, and her children’s future rewritten.

Sharing Hope Through the Christmas Food Parcel Drive
As the year drew to a close, Lesedi la Batho extended its social relief efforts through a Christmas Food Parcel Drive rooted in compassion and dignity. December is often a joyful season, yet for many vulnerable families it brings increased financial pressure and anxiety about meeting basic needs. Recognising this reality, the organisation set out with a simple but powerful purpose: to ensure that no family would face the festive season with an empty cupboard.
Through this initiative, 50 beneficiaries—including participants from our skills training programmes, support groups, and members of the surrounding community—received food parcels that provided essential nourishment during the holiday period. For many families, this support lifted a heavy burden, replacing uncertainty with relief and allowing them to focus on spending meaningful time together.
Beyond meeting immediate nutritional needs, the food parcel drive restored a sense of hope and reassurance. It reduced stress, preserved dignity, and reminded beneficiaries that they were not alone. For parents, it meant a Christmas without fear; for children, it meant a festive season filled with warmth, care, and a sense of belonging.
This initiative reflected Lesedi la Batho’s commitment to holistic support—addressing not only long-term empowerment, but also urgent needs that affect wellbeing and emotional stability. Through acts of giving, the organisation helped ensure that the year ended not in hardship, but in shared humanity and renewed hope.
