At the end of last year we celebrated winning the 2024 "Empowerment through Sport" award at the International Peace and Sport Forum in Monaco, and we are now excited to share that we have launched our summer sports programme for children & young adults living in Ritsona Refugee Camp. Thanks to your support, our new Athens-based team has re-launched sports sessions, offering safe spaces outside the camp where children and young adults can have fun, play games, and build bonds with their peers. The first sessions (for 18 – 23 year-olds) were held in early June, in collaboration with Anapodos Chalkidas football club.
Our new team is led by Project Coordinators, Khaled and Renia, and they are joined by Sports Facilitator Pauline, volunteer Garance, and our Communications Intern Deanna.
Over the summer we are aiming to build the team, and run activities based on last year’s successful Summer Camp for children in Ritsona - in July 2024 we arranged daily transportation to a local sports facility for up to 70 children. With the help of a local football club, and Café Rits, we provided sports and arts activities, a daily snack and a nutritious meal – this was an amazing collaborative project, and we look forward to running a similar project this year.
As we look to the future, we also hope to replicate a successful cricket programme we ran in November 2024 with a British NGO, Small Acts of Kindness. Although only a few of the children had any prior knowledge of cricket, they quickly took to the game, enjoying the challenges of batting and bowling.
In recent years, children in Ritsona Refugee Camp have faced increasingly harsh conditions, as the camp becomes more and more isolated, and cut off from vital services and support. The school holidays, which start in mid-June, herald over two months with little or no structured activities for children. These weeks of boredom and heat have a significant impact on the physical and mental health of camp residents, especially the youngest. The activities that we provide in our summer programme are therefore a critical outlet for children and young people in Ritsona, helping to foster resilience, self-worth, and confidence.
We cannot do this vital work without your support – your steadfast encouragement and financial contributions over the years have allowed us to continue to adapt to the changing circumstances in Greece. From all of us at Lighthouse Relief – thank you.
