This project will spark 80 Guatemalan preschool through Grade 2 students' love of reading by increasing their teachers' access to quality, age appropriate children's books in Spanish to read to them throughout the school year.
Do you remember the joy of reading books as a child? Unfortunately, many Guatemalan children will never know that joy. In Guatemala, children's books cost more than a day's wages, many children are first generation readers and libraries are unheard of in most communities. This means Guatemalan children have few opportunities to sit down, read a good book and develop a love of reading. Sparking a love of reading at an early age is the key to helping Guatemalan students reach their potential.
This project will spark Guatemalan student's love of reading by increasing their teachers' access to books to read to them in the classroom. Each month during the school year 8 Guatemalan preschool through grade 2 teachers will receive 8 quality, age appropriate books in Spanish. The teachers will read the books to their students and then return them to receive a new batch of 8 children's books each month.
This project will spark 80 Guatemalan preschool to Grade 2 students' love of reading by increasing their teachers' access to quality, age appropriate children's books to read to them. Being read to from a young age is a crucial first step towards future literacy. Literacy, in particular the ability to read, is an essential life skill that undoubtedly changes lives and opens up a realm of possibilities. Sparking Guatemalan children's love of reading will help them reach their potential.
