We provide sunscreen and other supplies to children with albinism in Vilanculos so they can protect their skin from harmful sun rays so their skin can stay smooth and healthy and they can grow up normally.
Albinism is a condition that affects children in all over the world - it's when you are born without melanin, the skin's natural defense again the suns UV rays. Without protection, the skin burns easily and is highly vulnerable to skins cancers. Sunscreen is very pricey in Mozambique, and particularly out of reach for subsistence fishers and farmers and others in Vilanculos for who are just making ends meet.
This project makes sunscreen available to any child with albinism. With a bottle of sunscreen at home, they can apply protective cream everyday before heading out for school or play. Additional donations of hats, chapsticks and long sleeve clothing are also be distributed for additional protection.
Albinism is not well understood in Africa and carries with it taboos and stigma that vary from culture to culture. By helping children with albinism to protect themselves from dangerous sunrays, they can stay smooth and clear and beautiful and healthy. Every child deserves to grow up healthy and have a chance to show their peers that they are regular people with the same rights and abilities to live a dignified life.
