Maid Strong: Stop Trafficking of Adolescent Girls

Our school just started on January 12. Hence we do not have much activities to report, except that we hired a new and seasoned principal to take us to the next level of providing quality education to the underprivileged at the most minimal cost as possible. Enugu State Ministry of Education requires our school to have functional laboratory equipment in order to secure an educational licence, especially for science-based accreditation. The state gives the following reasons for this new requirement:

1. Compliance With Government Educational Standards

• Regulatory bodies such as the Enugu State Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science & Technology require functional science laboratories before granting approval.

2. Safety Requirements

• Functional equipment ensures experiments are carried out safely, reducing the risk of accidents, which is a key factor for licensing.

3. Support for Practical-Based Learning

• Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Basic Science) require hands-on activities, and licensing officials check that schools can provide this.

4. Alignment With WAEC/NECO Accreditation Standards

• Examination bodies insist that schools must have standard laboratories before being used as exam centres or before students can sit for science practicals.

5. Enhancement of Students’ Scientific Skills

• Functional labs allow students to develop observation, measurement, analytical, and experimentation skills required in modern education.

6. Promotion of Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving

• Laboratory activities help students think scientifically and understand real-world applications of theory—something licensing officers evaluate.

7. Improved Teaching Effectiveness

• Teachers can demonstrate experiments rather than merely explaining them, improving understanding and meeting curriculum requirements.

8. Encouragement of Innovation and Creativity

• A functional lab environment inspires students to explore new ideas, create simple inventions, and engage in STEM-based projects.

• Students who experience proper laboratory training are better prepared for tertiary education in science, engineering, health sciences, and technology.

• The Nigerian curriculum emphasizes practical science; without labs, a school cannot deliver complete curriculum content—making licensing impossible.
