Project Report | Jan 5, 2018
Field Trips, Clubs, and Tours!

By Morgan Domijan | Fundraising Coordinator

The conservation club still continues to be a hit here in Zanzibar! Currently there are around 80 students enrolled in the conservation club. There have been 250 eco-bricks made by the students which helped complete the stairs for Jambiani Center, another Foundation project here in Zanzibar. The eco-bricks not only educate, but also engages and encourages the students to collect rubbish in their community and use them to build structures.

Additionally, the students in conservation club went on a thrilling field trip these past months to Zala Park and Kilimo Hai. These creative conservationists had a learning how to make mushrooms using organic waste and compost and getting to see a water heating system generated entirely from solar power

Our Eco Enthusiasts in Graduate Club have been working on their environmental awareness posters! Here is a snippet of what Eco Enthusiast Asma has to say about waste disposal in the village: “I think incorrect waste disposal is a major environmental issue for Kizimkazi. Correct waste disposal is important for the life of humans and to live healthily. People can help make a difference by going around the community, to pick up trash and also dispose of their own rubbish correctly in order to reduce environmental waste.” Go Asma!

Furthermore, boat drivers are still attending workshops which educate them on how to ethically drive the boat around and show tourists around. There are four drivers currently attending training and overall there are 8 boat drivers who have graduated the program. We are also currently working with two hotels and these hotels use the boat drivers who have been training.

Due to your generous support, we continually see an increase in conservation knowledge which in return will help both our land and water. Keep in touch to see what 2018 brings!
