Educate 50 vulnerable children in Sierra Leone

As we wrapped up the spring and summer term of 2025, Maronka Primary School continued to thrive as a vibrant hub of creativity, learning, and growth. Our youngest learners made joyful progress through play-based approaches, developing key literacy and numeracy skills in a nurturing environment. 

Across the school, activity-based learning is at the center of each classroom, with pupils actively engaged and excited by their lessons. We also embraced environmental and gender equity initiatives- including tree planting, composting, and waste management as part of our climate action program. A highlight this term was our Father Daughter Day celebration, where girls shared their dreams with their fathers, who pledged their continued support for girls’ education.

We’re especially proud to share that our solar energy project was completed this term. Thanks to the generous support of the NextEnergy Foundation, we installed an 8.5kWp solar power system and generator, providing reliable electricity across the site. These upgrades are already transforming daily school life - enabling safe and productive evening study sessions, ensuring steady access to digital tools in our ICT lab, and improving conditions for learning, teaching, and community engagement. With your continued support, we’re building a more sustainable future for all 100 students and staff at Maronka.

It's been a busy term at Maronka Primary School. EducAid Maronka continues to be a small primary school making a BIG difference. As one of our role model schools, Maronka hosts teacher training, workshops on education innovation, community engagement, gender equality, climate education and more! This term EducAid Maronka’s work has been reaching the rest of the world.

Students have been learning ICT skills in the new ICT lab, working to learn more about how they can protect the environment and be climate resilient and hosting a variety of visitors, including France24 for a news report on the use of AI in schools in Sierra Leone. Students enjoyed Newspaper Day in March, a day of learning how to analyse different media, looking at examples and working together to write their own pieces for a school newspaper.

Maronka students also continued their work on climate action and environmental protection in their communities. In class this term, students explored the life cycle of plastics, the dangers of single-use items, and the devastating effects on wildlife and ecosystems. They then took part in a competition across their Tutor Groups where students created posters and displayed them around sites to advocate for a zero-plastic policy, to win the “Greenest” Tutor Group.

EducAid’s Green Coordinator, Francis, highlighted these efforts and Maronka’s sustainable impact. “We’ve now implemented Green Nurseries at all EducAid sites. Bamboo, cashew, and mango seedlings are being grown at Maronka and these seeds are being used across all of EducAid’s sites. These three species are keystone species in Sierra Leone meaning we are contributing to long-term phase environmental and climate initiatives.”

Tablet learning has continued with pupils  making great progress in their literacy and numeracy skills through using tablet learning.

Head of School, MAF reported that “Every class is fully engaged in active learning practices. We had 100% teachers attendance and 46 boys, 45 girls in attendance from the first day of school. It has been a second term full of energy and love to continue making a difference in the lives of our students”.
