Strengthening Community Mental Health Support

1. Overview

During this  quarter,we  focused on sustaining community-based psychosocial support services, strengthening supervision and referral systems, and consolidating gains made with vulnerable beneficiaries. Activities prioritized continuity of care, capacity strengthening of peer supporters, and planning for program extension and scale-up.

Despite resource and contextual challenges, the project continued to provide safe spaces for emotional support, improve community-level response to mental health needs, and strengthen linkages to professional care.

2. Key Activities Implemented

2.1 Psychosocial Support Follow-up and Supervision

The project team conducted regular follow-up and supervision sessions to monitor ongoing psychosocial support activities. These engagements focused on:

  • Assessing progress of individuals and groups receiving psychosocial support
  • Identifying emerging mental health and psychosocial needs
  • Reinforcing ethical practice, confidentiality, and safe referral procedures
  • Providing guidance to peer supporters and community facilitators

Supervision ensured quality, consistency, and adherence to psychosocial support standards.

2.2 Peer Support and Community Group Supervision

Trained peer supporters and community facilitators received ongoing mentorship to strengthen service delivery. Support included:

  • Review of group session facilitation
  • Addressing challenges encountered during psychosocial support sessions
  • Strengthening emotional first aid and coping skills facilitation
  • Promoting self-care practices among peer supporters to reduce burnout

2.3 Referral and Case Management Strengthening

The project continued to strengthen referral pathways for individuals requiring advanced mental health care. Activities included:

  • Review of active cases and referral follow-ups
  • Coordination with health facilities and trained health workers
  • Documentation of referrals and outcomes

This ensured that individuals with severe or persistent mental health needs were appropriately supported.

3. Key Results and Achievements

  • Maintained continuity of psychosocial support services for vulnerable community members.
  • Strengthened supervision and mentoring of peer supporters and community facilitators.
  • Improved identification and referral of individuals requiring advanced mental health care.
  • Enhanced capacity of community structures to respond to mental health and psychosocial needs.
  • Developed a grant proposal to support program sustainability and scale-up.

 5. Lessons Learned

  • Regular supervision is essential for maintaining quality psychosocial support.
  • Peer supporters benefit from continuous mentorship and self-care support.
  • Strong referral systems improve outcomes for individuals with complex needs.
  • Linking field learning to resource mobilization strengthens program sustainability.

6. Next Quarter Plans

  • Continue psychosocial support follow-up and supervision.
  • Conduct refresher sessions for peer supporters and community facilitators.
  • Strengthen documentation and outcome tracking.
  • Expand referral coordination with health facilities.
  • Advance fundraising and partnership efforts to sustain and scale MHPSS services.
