Beloved Donors
Mbarara Rise Foundation recognizes that mental health is a crucial component of overall well-being, especially among LGBTIQ individuals who face stigma, discrimination, and social isolation. The Foundation has prioritized mental health support through counseling, peer support sessions, and community awareness campaigns to promote resilience and emotional wellness.
The main objectives of the mental health program are to provide psychosocial and emotional support to LGBTIQ persons affected by stigma, discrimination, and violence; to strengthen community understanding of mental health and reduce stigma surrounding it; and to build the capacity of peer educators and leaders to offer basic mental health first aid.
Key activities implemented during this period included individual counseling sessions conducted by trained counselors for victims of eviction, family rejection, and trauma. Group therapy and peer support meetings were organized to provide safe spaces for community members to share experiences and learn coping strategies. Mental health awareness workshops were held in collaboration with Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, reaching over 120 participants. Additionally, ten community peer leaders were trained in basic psychosocial support and referral pathways. Emergency support, including temporary shelter and referral to mental health professionals, was also provided to individuals experiencing severe distress.
These activities have had notable impact. Over 230 individuals accessed direct psychosocial and counseling services, contributing to improved awareness of mental health issues among LGBTIQ people. Partnerships with The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital were strengthened to ensure access to continued care. Beneficiaries reported reduced feelings of isolation and improved self-esteem as a result of participation in these programs.
Despite these achievements, several challenges remain. There is a limited number of trained mental health professionals available to serve marginalized groups, persistent stigma exists within families and communities, and insufficient funding constrains the sustainability of long-term counseling and rehabilitation programs.
To address these challenges, it is recommended that mental health support be integrated into all program areas, including economic empowerment and legal aid. The Foundation should expand partnerships with local mental health facilities and social workers and mobilize resources to establish a Community Wellness and Counseling Center.
In a Nut Shell, Mbarara Rise Foundation remains committed to supporting the mental well-being of LGBTIQ individuals and promoting inclusive access to mental health services. The Foundation calls upon partners and donors to continue supporting initiatives that promote healing, safety, and dignity for all members of the community.
