Parents from rural China often work multiple temporary jobs. For many, their work is incredibly far from their homes. Less parental involvement can result in children not learning key skills. Because of this lack of support, migrant or left-behind children can experience profound loneliness and struggle to cope with life's challenges. To improve the mental health and resilience of these at-risk youths, we teach mental health courses, life-skills, and resilience training in local schools.
Due to rapid urbanization, the population of migrant and left-behind children in Yunnan has increased significantly. Most migrant parents hold temporary jobs, leaving them little time to care for their children. The lack of family education has led to numerous challenges. Both migrant and left-behind children can lack necessary daily care, and this imbalance often leads to parent-child conflicts. More seriously, some children do extreme things like drop out of school or run away from home.
To help, CWEF teaches mental health courses, resilience training, and life-skills training to students and teachers in primary and secondary schools in Yunnan. In addition, every year we provide several at-risk students with one-on-one mental health counseling to help them cope with the challenges they're facing. Also, CWEF trains teachers and volunteers how to manage their own stress better so that they can more effectively teach and support their students.
Our mental health, resilience, and life skills training helps students cope with everyday stresses both now and in the future. As they care for themselves better, they will engage their studies more, build healthier relationships, and have increased capacity to give back to society. By educating teachers and students in these important life skills every year, CWEF strengthens individuals, families and communities in Yunnan.
