Through this initiative, Mitra Jyothi produces and distributes high-quality Braille textbooks and storybooks in regional languages, free of cost, to blind students in government and special schools. By supporting this project, you help create equal learning opportunities, promote literacy, and open the door to education and independence for blind children.
There are an estimated 45 million people in the world with visual disability. India has an estimated 15 million people who are blind. Thousands of visually impaired children in India struggle to access quality education due to a severe shortage of Braille books. Most schools and families cannot afford the high cost of Braille printing, leaving children without the basic learning materials they need. These children are denied the opportunity to read, learn, and thrive like their sighted peers.
This project will produce and distribute Braille books to visually impaired children in Karnataka, India giving them direct access to educational and recreational reading materials. Each donation will help emboss high-quality Braille books, including textbooks, storybooks, and exam guides. By providing these resources free of cost, the project will bridge the gap in access to education, empower children to read independently, perform better in school, and build a stronger foundation.
In the long term, this project has the potential to significantly increase literacy rates among blind children. Access to Braille materials from a young age promotes better comprehension, language skills, and academic confidence. With textbooks and storybooks in Braille, children can study independently, participate actively in the classroom, and compete with their sighted peers on equal footing. The access to education will prepare them for higher education and professional career
